Ayora: town-hall coat of arms, castle and historic quarters

The photograph shows a stone coat of arms displayed inside Ayora Town Hall beside the entrance to the council chamber; it is not a view of the castle. The heraldic relief is an indoor heritage object, so it provides no evidence for the fortress’s current appearance or ordinary public access to municipal rooms.

The castle occupies the height above town

Ayora Castle was built in the thirteenth century over an earlier Arab fortress. Walls, the keep and the former parade-ground area survive after damage during the War of the Spanish Succession. Its profile dominates the settlement, but the photographed coat of arms does not come from a view of that enclosure.

Los Altos belongs to a sequence of quarters

A town walk can connect Plaza Mayor, Calle Marquesa de Zenete and the Los Altos, La Solana, Santa Bárbara and Santa Lucía quarters. The rising ground leads towards the castle area and explains the relationship between fortress and houses. This is neither a flat route nor one clearly bounded “medieval quarter” for a first-time visitor.

Two churches represent different periods

Santa María la Mayor is Gothic and stands over a former mosque; Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built in phases during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The covered cross and market hall add other features to the centre. Exteriors can form part of the walk, while interior access depends on current use, worship and opening.
