Caring for a dependent person at home does not automatically create an entitlement to a payment. The family-environment care benefit is one possible response within Spain’s dependency system and must be approved in the individual care plan, or PIA. The decision considers the assessed degree, needs, home setting and whether suitable care can realistically be provided.
It is part of the dependency case
Where dependency has not yet been recognised, the application starts with municipal primary social services. Assessment and a degree decision come before the PIA proposal. Family care requires a permanence and training commitment from the caregiver; two participating relatives must each provide one.
This benefit does not turn family care into an employment contract. It supports the care received and may be reviewed when health, household arrangements or available support change.
Changing caregiver or service
A person with an approved PIA does not need to restart the degree assessment to report a new non-professional caregiver. The Generalitat provides a specific change form. Moving to home help, day care, residential care or personal assistance requires a request to alter or add PIA preferences and the documents relevant to that service.
Report changes in income, address, household or care promptly. Municipal social services are the proper entry point for reviewing the circumstances; submitting a form without the social assessment does not guarantee approval.
