Falling behind with a water bill does not trigger an automatic discount. Alicante operates a Social Fund for households facing financial hardship or exclusion, but municipal Social Services must assess eligibility. The current agreement runs from 26 January 2026 to 26 January 2027.
It covers water supply, sewerage and wastewater charges. Alicante City Council and the municipal water company coordinate cases. It is not a commercial offer or a universal low-income tariff.
Official figures recorded 2,276 beneficiary families on 31 July 2026. That number is a dated snapshot, not a closed quota or a promise that every later application will be approved.
Household circumstances must be evidenced
The council guide lists recipients of non-contributory pensions, Valencian Inclusion Income or Spain’s Minimum Living Income. It also covers households with a vulnerability report, emergency assistance, individual benefits, unemployment subsidies or Active Insertion Income.
These categories are a starting point, not a replacement for assessment. Existing Social Services users can raise the problem with their assigned professional. Aguas de Alicante also provides information, but the final amount and scope depend on the individual case and bill.
Applicants should locate the supply contract or bill, household identification and current evidence of income or benefits. Further evidence may be requested.
The agreement permits express extensions for up to four years in total, but renewal is not automatic. Any extension, eligibility change or new funding decision would require this article to be updated.
