Mutxamel will host the first institutional tribute of autonomous scope dedicated to the Day of the Victims of Terrorism on Wednesday, September 16. The Generalitat has chosen this Alicante municipality for the weight that terrorist violence has in its collective memory. The meeting seeks to recognize those who suffered attacks and accompany their families, in addition to remembering that democratic coexistence needs to preserve that legacy. The organization is the responsibility of the Conselleria of Justice, Transparency and Participation and also responds to a request made by the victim associations.

The date and location refer to the attack carried out by ETA in Mutxamel on September 16, 1991. A car bomb then killed three municipal workers: two local police officers and the driver of a crane. It was the attack with the most deaths registered in the Valencian Community. By holding the first commemoration here, the institutions connect the general tribute with a tragedy that continues to be part of the history of the municipality and the affected families.

The program will bring together representatives of the Generalitat and various municipalities, members of the Security Forces and Bodies, associations, families and members of civil society. It is planned that the president of the Generalitat, Juanfran Pérez Llorca, and the councillor Nuria Martínez will head the ceremony. The commemoration will cover the 44 people killed in attacks that occurred within the Valencian territory and Valencians who lost their lives in terrorist actions perpetrated elsewhere.

The new commemorative day was set by the Plenary of the Consell on July 31. From this year on, every September 16 will serve as a common reference for the acts of remembrance, recognition and support. The decision expands the institutional framework provided for by Law 1/2004, of May 24, which regulates the Generalitat’s aid to victims of terrorism and contemplates measures of protection, assistance and support for them and their families.

With this first call, Mutxamel becomes the center of a ceremony that combines local memory and autonomous recognition. The sense of the act goes beyond reviewing the facts: it aims to keep the victims present, transmit their story to society and reaffirm the defense of freedom against violence. The commemoration is born with an annual vocation and with the commitment to reserve a stable public space for the affected people and their relatives.
