A portable purifier moves air through one or more filtration systems. It can reduce certain particles or gases that pass through it, but cannot remove every source or replace ventilation, kitchen extraction, cleaning or moisture repair. Start by identifying the problem, not a brand.
Control the source first

Size by airflow, not area alone
Measure length, width and height to find room volume. Look for a verifiable clean-air delivery rate (CADR) and note the particle used. Area claims depend on ceiling height and assumed air changes, so two labels may assign different areas to the same airflow. The EPA home air-cleaner guide recommends a CADR large enough for the room.
Estimate equivalent air changes
Divide airflow in m³/h by room volume in m³ to estimate how many equivalent room volumes pass through the unit each hour. This does not promise perfectly mixed air: doors, furniture, placement and speed matter. Calculate at a noise level you can maintain, not turbo speed alone.
Particles and gases need different media
HEPA filtration targets particles. Odours and some gases commonly require activated carbon or another adsorbent, whose performance depends on quantity, design and contaminant. A thin carbon sheet is not equivalent to a large media mass. Check the exact maker claim and expected service conditions.
Compare noise at a useful speed
The lowest figure may represent little airflow and the maximum may be unsuitable for sleep. Seek levels by speed and measured reviews. Keep inlets and outlets clear. Automatic mode is convenient, but an integrated sensor does not necessarily detect every relevant pollutant.
Filter and annual cost
- Record each filter reference and price.
- Check whether the prefilter is washable or vacuum-only.
- Calculate one and two yearly replacements as scenarios.
- Add electricity at the normal speed.
- Confirm replacement availability before purchase.
Change indicators often count operating hours rather than directly measuring saturation. Inspect and replace according to the manual and actual conditions.
Avoid intentional ozone generation
The EPA advises avoiding devices that intentionally produce ozone and notes potential emissions from some ionising, electrostatic, plasma or UV designs. Consult CARB consumer information and its certified list. A low-emission certification does not prove sufficient airflow.

Filtration supplements source control and ventilation. Persistent smoke, combustion, symptoms, asthma, severe allergies or extensive mould call for suitable professional advice. A consumer purifier does not diagnose, treat or guarantee prevention of disease.
