Xilxes: three beaches, the wetland and a town set back from the sea

Xilxes does not fit into one continuous walk. The town centre lies roughly three kilometres from the coastal settlement, where Les Cases, El Cerezo and La Marina beaches follow one another. The photograph shows El Cerezo beach and the seafront from the shoreline.

Each stretch of beach has a different character

Les Cases forms a small bay protected by a breakwater, with pines and a marked botanical micro-reserve. El Cerezo is longer and more exposed to waves and contains the accessible beach area. La Marina to the south retains a more natural profile, linking to the dune belt and part of the Blue Trail. Services, flags and bathing conditions are seasonal and need a fresh check.

The wetland is not an extension of the promenade

Marjal de Xilxes forms part of the chain of coastal wetlands in Castellón. It receives migratory and water birds and changes with flooding cycles and rice or melon cultivation. Walking, cycling and birdwatching are possible, but visitors should keep to appropriate routes and respect marked areas, wildlife and working farmland.

The historic centre requires a separate journey

Plaça d’Espanya contains the town hall, clergy house, Font de la Unió and the late seventeenth-century Assumption church, which has Baroque and Neoclassical features. Behind the church, a Christian burial ground was documented with graves dating from the thirteenth to eighteenth centuries. These places belong to the town, not the seafront.
