Atalaya Castle dominates Villena and provides the clearest spatial reference for understanding the historic city. Its medieval origins, later alterations and interpretation inside the tower explain far more than the view from its walls.

What the tower adds

The upper levels contain displays about the fortress and figures including Don Juan Manuel. Interior visits depend on current arrangements; check booking, tour times and accessibility before climbing, as this documentary review did not verify them on site.

The Treasure and the smaller hoard are different finds

MUVI occupies the former electro-flour mill, houses the municipal collections and displays the Villena Treasure. The Cabezo Redondo hoard is a separate, smaller group of objects found at the archaeological site of that name. Both illuminate the Bronze Age, but conflating their names removes the archaeological context of each discovery.

The present museum venue and display are comparatively recent. Check MUVI’s own current information rather than relying on times or addresses retained in older museum listings.

Structuring the day

Castle and museum provide complementary perspectives: the fortress explains control of the territory and defensive architecture, while the museum presents recovered objects in context. Cabezo Redondo needs separate planning and should not be added as though it stood beside the town centre.
