Vox councillor in Valencia questioned as a suspect over entry into student union offices

The Valencia court has summoned Vox city councillor Juanma Badenas as a suspect for ransacking the headquarters of the Sindicat d'Estudiants in July. The councillor, who defends himself by saying that he acted in his capacity as an inspector of municipal property, continues to receive his salary while the case progresses in court.

On July 3, a representative of the Sindicat d’Estudiants arrived at its headquarters in Valencia and found the lock broken and a key missing inside. After reviewing the security cameras, he discovered that the Vox councillor Juanma Badenas, accompanied by two advisors, had illegally entered the premises, recording documents, recording videos and staying for several hours. The organization reported the incident to the National Police and filed a criminal complaint for alleged acts of breaking and entering and discovery of secrets. The València First Instance Court, after analyzing the complaint, has summoned Badenas and the two advisors as suspects to appear for questioning on January 14 at 10 a.m. The Sindicat d’Estudiants will attend the court on December 17 as a victim. Although the case is in the investigation phase, the councillor remains in office and is receiving his salary. Badenas justified his entry by saying that he acted in his capacity as an inspector of municipal property, after receiving a report from the Local Police that the premises had been closed for days. The City Council, led by María José Catalá, requested a legal report, but the municipal advisory board declined to do so, considering that the matter was already in court. The union spokesman, Mario Tercero, has criticized that the councillor remains in office “with total impunity and receiving a salary”, and has accused the Catalá government of covering up this type of conduct. The Sindicat d’Estudiants, which has distributed the images from the security cameras on social networks, recalled that the premises are leased by the City Council as part of a collaboration program with social entities for more than three years. The complaint also mentions that the councillor and his advisors did not just enter, but recorded videos inside the offices and reviewed documentation, which could constitute an act of discovery of secrets. The court has summoned the union representatives as victims and Badenas as a suspect, according to the union that filed the complaint. The resolution is not final and can be appealed within three days, according to the interlocutòria. The case is still ongoing, with the councillor in office and without disciplinary measures from the City Council.
