The Universitat de València has inaugurated an exhibition that honors Artur Heras, a Xativa artist and a reference in contemporary arts, in a tribute to cultural resistance during the Franco regime. The activity, titled ‘Shared Spaces. Culture, Thought and Resistance’, opens to the public on September 22 at 7 p.m. at the Sala de la Muralla del Col·legi Major Rector Peset. The exhibition recovers the memory of Valencian spaces that, in a context of censorship and repression, were centers of cultural meeting, intellectual exchange and critical thought, highlighting the importance of these places as spaces of symbolic and creative resistance.
The project, commissioned by Lara Sánchez Canet, is part of the Llutxent hermitage, linked to the Alfons Roig family, where artists, writers and intellectuals gather in an environment of great cultural intensity. The research is based on Roig’s personal archive and testimonies from people who lived this experience, such as Eusebi Moreno, Pep Monter, Rosa Mascarell, Rafael Català and, also, Artur Heras. This approach allows us to reconstruct a network of cultural exchange that survived despite the restrictions of the regime.
The exhibition not only recovers these spaces, but also analyzes the paper of women in these environments, highlighting the limitations that will condition their recognition and presence. The tour is expanded to other locations such as the Joan Fuster House in Sueca or the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vilafamés, founded by Vicent Aguilera Cerni, to show how peripheral places have acted as windows to the cultural world in an adverse political context.
Artur Heras, who will maintain a close relationship with the University for more than a decade, is one of the main axes of the exhibition. He will collaborate on various projects at the La Nau Cultural Center, will star in two retrospective exhibitions on his work and will act as a curator in other initiatives. His figure is thus honored as a fundamental part of contemporary Valencian culture. The inauguration ceremony will count on the participation of the Vice-Dean of Culture, Sports and Social Welfare, Albert Moncusí, the director of the Col·legi Major Rector Peset, Carles Xavier López, Anacleto Ferrer, friend and curator of some of his projects, and the curator Lara Sánchez Canet, in addition to family members and people close to the artist.
The exhibition is part of the Sisena edition of Activa Cultura, a program of the Vice-Rectorate of Culture, Esports and Social Inclusion that finances projects by young researchers and students. It is the last of the eight selected proposals, with a total budget of 16,000 euros. Sánchez Canet’s research, a graduate in Art History and a master’s degree in Art History and Visual Culture, has been key to the construction of the project, which can be visited until October 25. This initiative not only recalls a key period of collective memory, but also highlights the cultural commitment of a generation that defended freedom of expression in times of repression.
