Torrevieja hospital plans 187 extra beds and a phased expansion of staff

The plan provides for 667 additional staff. Official timings allow two years for design and three for construction, with temporary clinics announced in the meantime.

Torrevieja hospital beds: 270 currently and 457 planned, an increase of 187.

Torrevieja University Hospital would increase its capacity from 270 to 457 beds under expansion plans presented by the Valencian government on Thursday 10 September. The plans also provide for 667 additional staff across the health district, recruited in stages. Patients face a wait of several years for the larger hospital: the published timetable allows two years for design and three for construction.

The Valencian government’s statement places the project in a health district covering ten municipalities and more than 225,000 residents, with demand rising in summer. The expansion would add 30,000 square metres of floor space, 150 outpatient consulting rooms, four operating theatres and new delivery rooms, alongside greater intensive care and haemodialysis capacity.

The five-year estimate covers design and construction. It is not a confirmed opening date, and the additional beds are not being presented as available now.

The extra beds and a new specialist outpatient centre are planned for the first phase. Later work would remodel the existing building and integrate the complex. Phasing is intended to keep clinical services running during construction, according to the plans also reported by Diario de Alicante.

The land follows a separate administrative process. On 6 July, Torrevieja City Council announced that it had begun processing an agreement for the early transfer of 11,492 square metres in the La Ceñuela development area. That announcement opened public consultation; it did not certify a completed transfer. In September, the regional government still describes the plot as land the council will transfer.

Twelve consulting rooms ahead of the main expansion

The nearer-term measure announced for the hospital is twelve consulting rooms in prefabricated units. The regional government says they will enter service shortly, without specifying a date in its 10 September statement.

The staffing expansion would bring 404 recruits during the first two phases and 263 during the third. The roles include specialists, nurses, technicians, assistants, administrative and management staff, among others. The figure does not mean 667 additional doctors.

The announcement sets out the intended capacity, but contract dates, the start of each phase and the actual arrival of staff remain to be established. The opening of the temporary consulting rooms will offer an earlier measure of how the plan translates into care that patients can access.
