Registering as a resident in Castelló de la Plana does not involve waiting for an application window or paying a fee. The procedure is available throughout the year, but one point is worth resolving before leaving home: the documents depend on who owns or rents the property.
The council’s electronic office states that a new registration is completed in person. Bringing the right identification, proof of address and, where required, signed authorisation can therefore prevent a second visit. The following steps explain how to prepare for the appointment.
What the council needs to verify
The council checks two separate facts: the identity of the applicant and whether that person actually lives at the address given. Applicants over 16 must provide an original identity document or an authentic copy. The municipal record distinguishes between a Spanish DNI; for EU and EEA citizens, an NIE together with a valid passport or national identity card; and, for other nationalities, a valid passport or Spanish-issued residence permit.
Children under 16 require a family book or birth certificate. If a child already has a DNI, the council’s information says the family book must also be provided. Family circumstances that cannot be covered by the usual signature of both parents may require the specific parental declaration available from the municipal electronic office.
Your housing situation determines the remaining paperwork
If one of the applicants owns the home or is named on the tenancy, the address can be supported by a title deed or purchase contract, Land Registry note, IBI property-tax bill or current tenancy agreement. For a rented home, the council also asks for the latest payment receipt showing the landlord, tenant, payment period and address.
Electricity, gas or water contracts may also be used when they show the supply address and the contract holder’s full name. If none of the applicants appears on those documents, authorisation is required from the person who does. The appropriate form can be downloaded from the council’s official municipal-register page.
Making an appointment and choosing an office
An appointment is required to register at the General Registry in Plaça Major, 1. It can be arranged through the council appointment page, by calling 010 from Castelló or 964 226 010 from outside the municipality.
The procedure page also lists district registries at Plaça Primer Molí, Carrer Ricardo Catalá at Joaquín Márquez, Avinguda Germans Bou, Plaça Lagunas de Ruidera–Mas Blau and Passeig Buenavista in El Grau. As locations and opening hours may change, confirm the exact office while booking. The published general hours for district offices are weekday mornings, with shorter hours in summer.
A two-minute check before the visit
Check that identity documents are current, the address is written consistently across the supporting records and a rent receipt contains all the details requested by the council. Where authorisation is needed, prepare the municipal form and the authorising person’s documentation.
Registration is free and the municipal register provides official evidence of a person’s residence and usual address. Someone who already lives in Castelló de la Plana but moves to another home within the municipality should use the procedure for changing their registered address, rather than treating the move as a cancellation followed by a new registration.
Once registered, residents can use the electronic office to obtain an individual registration note or certificate. For questions about an unusual situation, the council’s citizen-contact page lists the 010 service, the number for callers outside Castelló and other ways to request information.
