L’Alfàs del Pi has two centres that should not be treated as one: the inland town and coastal l’Albir, home to the beach, Roman Villa and the best-known entrance to Serra Gelada. Travel is required between them. This guide offers realistic combinations and distinguishes the lighthouse walk from the much harder traverse of the ridge.
L’Alfàs town centre
The eighteenth-century Parish Church of Sant Josep is a useful anchor for exploring the traditional streets. Espai Cultural Escoles Velles occupies the former school building and has a programme that should be checked before visiting. Beyond the immediate centre, Molí de Mànec interprets hydraulic infrastructure associated with farming, while the Delso Museum presents work by painter and sculptor Pedro Delso. These spaces do not necessarily open continuously, so select one and verify its hours.
L’Albir Roman Villa
The open-air museum protects remains of a Roman rural settlement near the coast. Its bath area and interpretation of domestic life give the site a clear purpose beyond displaying isolated ruins. Although close to the seafront, it should not be assumed to have unrestricted access. Check municipal opening information before planning the day around the archaeological site.
Racó de l’Albir beach
Racó de l’Albir is a pebble beach rather than a sandy one, so water shoes may be useful. Accessibility and active services can vary by season. The promenade opens views across Altea Bay, but the beach belongs to L’Alfàs del Pi; nearby features in Altea should not be reassigned to it simply because the municipal boundary is not visually obvious.
Choosing access at the coast
The promenade, pebble shore and Roman Villa involve different surfaces. A step-free seafront does not guarantee an easy entry into the water, while access to the archaeological site depends on its own opening arrangements. Check the beach service point and flags on the day, never use the lighthouse car park as a promise of available spaces, and allow extra time if anyone in the group needs an adapted route.
The lighthouse route: Serra Gelada’s accessible option
The natural park’s red route runs from the l’Albir entrance to the lighthouse on a paved track of just over five kilometres return. It passes through a tunnel, viewpoints and the area of a former ochre mine. At Punta Bombarda, the remains of a sixteenth-century watchtower stand near the lighthouse built in 1863, now an interpretation centre.
The regional government describes this as a low-difficulty route accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs. Accessibility does not remove heat, sun exposure or gradients: carry water, use sun protection and check park notices. The interpretation centre may keep separate opening hours.
Do not confuse it with the Serra Gelada traverse
The lighthouse walk is not the yellow route crossing the ridge towards Benidorm. The traverse involves rougher ground, substantial elevation changes and very different exposure. A family visit can reasonably focus on the lighthouse. Anyone considering the traverse should use its own park information, current weather and an honest fitness assessment rather than the red-route details.
Three realistic day plans
- Coast and archaeology: Roman Villa, promenade and beach after confirming museum access.
- Nature: lighthouse walk early in the day, followed by time in l’Albir.
- Whole municipality: town centre in the morning and l’Albir later, allowing for the transfer.
Nearby contrasts
Altea offers another old town and coast; Benidorm is a different urban experience; and Beniardá replaces the coast with the inland Guadalest valley.
Two centres and two levels of effort
In Alfaz del Pi, do not merge the inland centre with l’Albir: San José church stands in the town, while the beach, Roman villa and lighthouse access are on the coast. The paved lighthouse route is not the Serra Gelada ridge traverse either. Check heat, park notices, interpretation-centre hours and Roman-villa opening before combining these separate outings.
