A robot vacuum does not replace all cleaning. It keeps dust, crumbs and hair under control between deeper sessions. Its value depends less on one suction figure than on whether it can navigate your home, fit below furniture, cross thresholds, use available replacement parts and work without frequent rescues.

- Height of thresholds between rooms.
- Side and front clearance required by the dock.
- Width of narrow routes between furniture.
- Rug type, height and tassels.
- Distance to a permanent power socket.
- Wi‑Fi coverage at the dock if an app is required.
Mapping, navigation and obstacle avoidance are different

Do not compare suction figures alone
Advertised figures may not use comparable methods across brands. Results also depend on brush design, airflow, robot height, flooring and cleaning frequency. Look for evidence about the exact model and recurring comments on edges, rugs, hair and noise rather than turning one number into the whole decision.
What mopping can realistically do
A damp pad can help with fine dust and recent marks, but it is not equivalent to manually scrubbing a dry stain. Check water control, mop lifting and carpet exclusion. The tank and pad still need emptying, washing and drying as directed.
Parts and maintenance
- After demanding runs: empty the bin and inspect brushes and wheels.
- Periodically: clean sensors, contacts and filters according to the manual.
- Before buying: check references and prices for filters, main brush, side brushes, pads and dock bags.
- For pets: prioritise a roller that can be removed without a complex operation.
App, account and privacy
Connected models may store maps, routines and account data. Check what works without cloud access, which permissions the app requests, how to delete a map, how long updates are promised and how the account is protected. Replace default passwords and keep the app and firmware updated.
Sensible buying profiles
Basic upkeep: orderly navigation and an easy bin. Several rooms: editable maps and room cleaning. Pets: brush access and available consumables. Vacuum plus mop: water control and carpet management. Minimum intervention: an automatic dock, accepting its footprint and consumables.
