What to see

Marqués de Fontalba Palace

The palace was built for the Marqués de Fontalba between 1916 and 1922. Its two storeys face the garden, with a porticoed central section and upper balustrade; the building forms a group with the gardens and the Church of Our Lady of Bethlehem.

Jacarilla palace gardens

The gardens and pine grove cover about two hectares. Beyond the Gate of the Lions are a palm avenue, fountains, statues, a sundial, small temples and the grotto of Our Lady of Almudena.

Town centre

The walk can continue from the palace grounds to the Church of Our Lady of Bethlehem and the central streets. This section shows how the former estate relates to the present-day village.

Market gardens of the Vega Baja

Jacarilla lies in the Vega Baja, close to the right bank of the River Segura. Beyond the monumental enclosure, the cultivated landscape and the settlement of Vistabella help explain the municipality’s relationship with the district’s market gardens.

Landscape and nature

  • market gardens and Segura River landscape
  • salt marshes, hills or coast depending on the municipality

Local food

  • produce from the Vega Baja market gardens
  • rice dishes, pastries and traditional Segura cuisine

Practical information

Half a day is normally enough for the centre and its main sight; extend the route when adding rural paths or a nearby town. Check opening times, avoid the hottest hours and respect farmland and irrigation features. Carry water and sun protection even when most of the route stays within the town centre.
