Valencia: Silk Exchange gargoyles, Central Market and old town

The photograph isolates a stone gargoyle projecting from a wall of Valencia’s Silk Exchange. It shows neither the Column Hall, courtyard nor complete façade. Weathering on the figure and the ashlar masonry reveal a detail easily missed in a building facing the Central Market and standing beside Santos Juanes Church.

The Silk Exchange joins trade and architecture

Construction of the Merchants’ Exchange began in the late fifteenth century, when the former premises no longer matched the city’s commercial prosperity. The Column Hall and its spiral columns are distinct from the Consulado del Mar and Orange-Tree Courtyard. The ensemble entered the World Heritage List in 1996.

The market belongs to another period

Across the square, the Central Market is a work of Modernista architecture and remains a working food market. Its domes, stained glass and metal structure are not an extension of the Gothic exchange. Combining both requires separate attention to trading hours and monument admission.

Ciutat Vella extends beyond this square

From the exchange, a walk can continue towards Plaza Redonda, the Cathedral and historic gates. The Water Tribunal meets outside the Apostles Gate at specific times; it is not a permanent performance. Choosing one route leaves other districts, the Turia Garden and seafront for separate outings.
