Chiva: castle, Bechinos quarter and town heritage

The photograph looks up at a masonry wall section of Chiva Castle among pine trees on a dry slope; it is not a panorama of the whole fortress. Vegetation and framing also prevent an assessment of all the ruins, path or protective features.

The final approach to the castle is on foot

The medieval fortress occupies the hill above the town. A track provides part of the approach, but the final section is walked; the nineteenth-century Sanctuary of Virgen del Castillo stands beside the castle. These are two neighbouring elements rather than one building, and the gradient matters when planning a visit.

Bechinos preserves the old settlement pattern

The Bechinos quarter retains streets of Arab origin and the structure known as La Torreta, probably built for defence between the eleventh and twelfth centuries. This area lies within the town and offers a different reading from the castle: domestic scale, turning lanes and heritage elements incorporated among houses.

San Juan and El Torico explain heritage and tradition

San Juan Bautista Parish Church contains notable paintings. The El Torico interpretation centre documents a local tradition and provides a reference point for the “La cuerda que nos une” town route. Church, centre and route have different uses, so interiors and activities need checking separately.
