Penáguila: the Portalet gateway, village walls and Santos Garden

Find traces of Penàguila’s medieval layout and plan a visit to Santos Garden without confusing it with an excursion to the castle or rock shelters.

In Penáguila, entrances deserve as much attention as façades. The Portalet makes you turn as you enter the medieval centre: that way of controlling passage explains the old settlement better than a list of pretty houses. Outside the village, Santos Garden offers a change of scene.

Walls among the houses

The medieval enclosure has a rectangular layout. On Carrer de la Mare de Déu del Patrocini, towers are incorporated among homes; to the north stand Torre Vernet and a stretch of wall. Look for those landmarks as you walk, rather than expecting an entirely freestanding wall you can follow all the way around.

The garden sets its own pace

Santos Garden combines a pond, a hedge maze and a neoclassical pavilion. It is a Romantic garden, not an amusement park. The regional tourism listing states free admission on weekends and public holidays and asks visitors to check current opening times before travelling.

The council dates its construction to 1841, at the initiative of Joaquim Rico i Soler, and describes a cypress-lined approach to the entrance. It also records an orchid house within the grounds. When planning, confirm whether the indoor spaces you want to see are included in that day’s opening.

Our suggested combination is the medieval centre and garden, leaving time to notice the details. If the garden is your reason for travelling, check that it will be open first: the village streets are not a substitute for that visit.

The castle is a separate outing

The castle remains and Torre Sena stand outside the village. Adding them means planning another route. A garden visit should not be confused with access to the rock paintings either: the council warns that several shelters are very difficult to reach. For that heritage, ask about a dedicated activity rather than seeking a way in independently.
